Hour four already! Thank you for stopping by and cheering me on :O) I finished up The Legend of Sleepy Hollow by Washington Irving. Last time I read it was in grammar school and it was nice to re-read especially during this time of year.

All the stories of ghosts and goblins that he had heard in the afternoon now came crowding upon his recollection. The night grew darker and darker; the stars seemed to sink deeper in the sky, and driving clouds occasionally hid them from his sight. He had never felt so lonely and dismal. He was, moreover, approaching the very place where many of the scenes of the ghost stories had been laid.

Now i'm reading:


title: The Darkest Kiss (Lords of the Underworld, Book 2) by Gena Showalter which is a paranormal romance i've been meaning to get to for some time. I read book 1 and really enjoyed it.

It's that time again, the 24 Hour Read-A-Thon. It's currently 8am here and i'll be reading as much as I can over the next 24 hours. I don't really have a list of books i'd like to read, i'm just going to go with the flow and read whatever I feel like picking up.

I'm randomly reading whatever strikes my fancy for this read-a-thon, this way I don't geel overwhelmed to read a stack of books.


Do you have any goals for the read-a-thon (i.e. number of books, number of pages, number of hours, or number of comments on blogs)? I'd like to read as much as I can, visit other bloggers in between and have fun.


If you’re a veteran read-a-thoner, Any advice for people doing this for the first time? This is my second time participating and I'd just say have fun and have a cuppa coffee handy :) Also check the 24 Hour Read-A-Thon site for updates throughout the day.

Dewey's 24 Hour Read-a-Thon



Hour 1: Good morning! Okay, i'm ready. It is now 8am on Saturday. I will be trying to read as much as I can from now until 8am on Sunday.

It's not going to be easy, but I'll give it my best! I know I'm not pulling an all-nighter, but I will be staying up late reading.

I had my first cup of coffee already, here's a virtual cup for those who need a little boost!
I'll probably be using alot of !!!!!!! exclamation points cuz of the caffeine boost. Don't mind me!

Dewey's 24 Hour Read-a-Thon

I really wanted to do this last year, but I was scared to try. I figured I wouldn't be able to complete it. But what the heck, i'm going to give it a try this time around.


The next 24-Hour Read-a-thon will start: April 18th at 5am Pacific (1pm GMT).

What is the 24 Hour Read-a-thon?


It’s sort of a reading challenge, only everyone participates at the same time. For 24 hours, we read books, post in our blogs about our reading, and visit other readers’ blogs. We also participate in mini-challenges throughout the day.

I figured i'd pick light reads, and see how it goes. I've never read for more than maybe 2-3 hours at a time, so this will be a hard challenge for me. But I will try!

The most hardcore among us will stay up the entire 24 hours and do nothing but read and update, even going so far as to skip showering and eat meals while reading.

Sooooo not me. lol. I will be living my life as usual, showers, sleep and meals included...but will be reading a whole lot more during the 24 hours. I'll be posting regular updates here at my blog.

2. Girls in Pants: The Third Summer of the Sisterhood (Sisterhood of Traveling Pants, Book 3)

I made the 'Sweet Pea Shawl' using the Stitch 'N Bitch Crochet: The Happy Hooker pattern book. Isn't that a great name for a crochet pattern book? If you crochet, or just want to learn how, this is a great pattern book. The patterns are fun and theres a little bit of everything in there. Toys, Wearables, Kitchen crochet....It's definitely one of my favorite pattern books. I know they also have a knitting version of this book as well.



The pattern was easy to follow, and I like the result. I think the stitch looks delicate and complicated all at once.











I really like the way it came out. I want to make another one in a different color. Here's a few photos, my kids took of me modeling it.













Draped around my shoulders, it almost looks like a scarf.

Now that the holiday season is over, it’s time for new projects! Help celebrate Dewey’s love of books AND of knitting! This is a mini-challenge for those of us that are honoring her memory by reading the books she talked about on her blog, and who also share her love of knitting! How about dedicating at least one of your 2009 knitting (or other handwork!) projects to Dewey’s memory? Perhaps you would like to knit or crochet some things for a local charity? Or if you’ve never learned to knit, maybe it’s time to learn!

So in honor of Dewey's Dewey's Knit- A-Long, I am having a crochet giveaway. Many of you may know already, that I do crochet, often. It's my other passion besides reading. This past Christmas, Serena gifted me a crochet pattern book called 'Seriously Cute Crochet'. It's a fun pattern book, filled with cute patterns for crocheting 'amigurumis' a.k.a. stuffed toys. I've been busy crocheting up a few of these cuties...here they are:







I made 2 bunnies, and a bear, called Valentina.

Now, many of my blog readers know that I crochet. Crochet is kind of like Knitting's sister. Crochet and Knitting are two entirely different crafts, but similar in many ways. So in honor of Dewey, I will be hosting a crochet giveaway where I will be raffling off two of my handmade items to two of my blog readers. Stay tuned for updates. I have to make the items first :)

It's Saturday and I'd usually be checking out Dewey's blog to see this weeks Weekly Geeks theme. She made something so simple as a blog post, turn into something to look forward to.



Dewey had a great knack for getting people together online. Some of my favorite WG topics were: visit five other Weekly Geeks, pair up with another Weekly Geek and interview each other about a book, fun facts about authors and A Quote a Day. So in memory of Dewey, and in keeping with the Quote A Day theme, I will be posting quotes on a regular basis.



Another fun topic was: a photo tour of something bookish in our lives. You can see Dewey's bookish photos here. She took photos of her favorite reading spots. I noticed right away, she was a knitter :)



I hope her blog events can continue even though Dewey has passed. It would be a great way to remember her.

I was shocked and saddened to hear that Dewey passed away this past week.

Many of you may have known her through her wonderful blog called 'Hidden Side of a Leaf'. Hers was one of the first blogs I found online and one of my favorites.

I like the quote she had on the sidebar:

"Birth, life, and death -- each took place on the hidden side of a leaf."- Toni Morrison

She was a great asset to the blogging community. Dewey was host to blogging events such as Bookworm's Carnival, 24 Hour Read-a-thon and my personal favorite, Weekly Geeks. Her blogging presence will be very much missed. Even though I did not know her in 'real life' she was a sweet person and I'm glad I got to know her a bit online. May she rest in peace. My prayers go out to her family and friends during this time as well.
