I had breakfast with my stepfather today. A a native of Bermuda, he brought me back a present from his last trip there - a Christmas ornament filled with pink sand. The pinkness of some sand in Bermuda is caused by the crushed shells of microscopic animals - red and pink forams - which live on the underside of coral reefs. I spent much of my childhood in Bermuda and never really noticed the color of the sand :)
