- Secretariat
This week's movie rental was Secretariat, a 2010 movie about the racehorse, and starred Diane Lane as Secretariat's owner (with Scott Glenn in a small role as her father), John Malkovich as Secretariat's trainer, and Nelsan Ellis as Secretariat's groom. Basic plot (set in 1969-73) from Wikipedia -
Housewife and mother Penny Chenery (Diane Lane) agrees to take over her ailing father’s Virginia-based Meadow Stables, despite her lack of horse-racing knowledge. With the help of veteran trainer Lucien Laurin (John Malkovich), Chenery manages to navigate the male-dominated business, ultimately fostering the first Triple Crown winner in 25 years and what may be one of the greatest racehorses of all time.
I couldn't help but compare this film with the movie Seabiscuit, which I liked much more (see my past post on the book, Seabiscuit: An American Legend by Laura Hillenbrand).
But having said that, the movie was still interesting and probably worth a watch if you like horses. I am not a fan of horse racing, but I grew up reading books about horses and it does seem like most books/movies about horses, even ones like Hidalgo, involve racing. I didn't really know much about Secretariat, so I looked him up. He was exceptional in that he was ... the first U.S. Triple Crown champion in twenty-five years, setting new race records in two of the three events in the Series—the Kentucky Derby (1:59 2/5), and the Belmont Stakes (2:24)—records that still stand today.
