title: The Soul Collectors
author: Charles Quince
published: 2009
pages: 78
genre: horror
first line: The tall, blue-eyed man settled into a well-worn rocking chair on the porch of his home.
Evil is no stranger to the small town of Maysville. Unsuspecting college students are dying after sessions with the local fortuneteller. A disciple of Hecate, Greek guardian of the ghost world, trolls the town for more victims. Only David holds the key to saving his girlfriend and preventing more deaths-a Holy Key, hewn from the wood of the cross of Christ and passed down through the centuries. Follow David's journey as he leaves behind his mundane student life to uncover the mysteries lying beneath Mayville's benign facade.
In the town of Mayville, a spooky couple live in a creepy house.
A few college students go to them to get thier fortunes told. Some of these people get unusual 'gifts' when they visit the couple, such as a watch that reverses time and turns the wearer younger. And a wallet that refills itself with as much money as the owner desires. However, these gifts don't come without a price, thier souls.
My problem with this book was that it was too short, the author needed to write another 100 pages or so. There is no chracter development and the storyline needed that. I felt like there was alot going on in the story, but it was rushed since the book is just 78 pages. There was really no transition between one character's events to the next, it was a bit confusing. One minute you're reading about one character and setting, and without warning, you're in another setting with other characters.
I almost felt like this book was a 'rough draft'. It's a shame because the storyline is good, it just needed to be developed. I also like the cover and title. When I accepted this book to read and review, I was expecting a longer story, I had no idea it would be so short.
