Although the latest SI was delivered to jshox's house on Thursday, I'm just now getting around to encapsulating the magazine's article on the Saints following our gritty comeback against the Fish in Miami. Ya are probably wondering what's with the belated blog, jshox? Well, the blogger website and my computer for some reason weren't into rubbing each other's nubbins, if you know what I'm saying.

And yesterday jshox had to attend some Halloween functions dressed as The Dude, who abides.

First off, the SI article says Drew Brees went all "Jimmy Chitwood on his coach" to get that first touchdown in Miami. And when he spiked the ball in the end zone, Jonathan Vilma said "It was an emotional charge. I loved it. We all loved it."

On practice: Brees keeps all of the receivers after practice to make sure all of them run all the patterns.

On Devery Henderson and his improved catching abilities: "Now he begins practice every day by working with (receivers coach Curtis Johnson) on catching a falling handkerchief with his fingertips, to remind himself that passes should be caught the same way." He also plays catch with trainers throughout practices and games.

Jeremy Shockey says "It's a blessing to be here." Drew always finds the open receiver. "In my experience, that's unusual."

Jonathan Stinchcomb expresses the surprise of seeing Brees dunk the ball over the field goal post: "Who knew?" And more from Stinch: "Pure attitude. In past years, a game like this, I don't know if we get there at the end. There's no question about it -- we'll be better because of this."

As semi-predicted UNC covered the spread, and beat #13 Virginia Tech tonight in Blacksburg.

T.J. Yates and Greg Little lead the UNC offense, Casey Barth kicked two field goals late, one as time expired to get the win. This knocks VT out of the running for good as they now have three loses.

Houston -6.5 OVER Southern Miss...This is my money line bet of the week, I think that Southern Miss can win this game, but I don't want this to turn out like Dolphins vs Saints. So I'm taking Houston 40-29.

San Jose State +35 OVER Boise State...Still riding the "Why don't you guys ever schedule big games, teams will continue to pass you in the standings with your weaker then this guy schedule" bandwagon. Boise State is praying Oregon beats USC this weekend.

Georgia +15 OVER Florida...A late AJ Green touchdown keeps this one close, Florida 30-17.

Miami -7.5 OVER Wake Forest...Although Miami had a setback against CJ Spiller and Clemson I still think they win this one 34-21.

TCU -35 OVER UNLV...THE TCU WARWAGON IS AT FULL CAPACITY!!!

Penn State -14.5 OVER Northwestern...Penn State in a low scoring affair 15-0.

OK, so Twitter is how we really speak.  After all, what else can I say about our last win? "This game was great for our team!! we never gave up and this will bring our locker room closer!!"


Take Reggie for example. This week he went on some radio show talking about how his past sub-par performances will be vindicated when we win the Super Bowl and he makes it to the Pro Bowl and is voted NFL MVP.
I can't wrong a guy for saying any of those things. So here's Reggie, quick to dispute, via Twitter, what he said: "Ok just need to clarify one thing since you can't trust REPORTER's these days! Our team does not think or talk about going undefeated!" . . . "We take it one game @ a time and one play @ a time! The undefeated talk is left up to the fans and media. We just play the game. Humble pie!" . . . "I love how the ESPN reporter basically cut out my whole answer to his question about going undefeated and just used the end of it..." . . . "Gotta love the media!"

If jshox knows anything, it's not to trust the media. And the New York version will run you out of town. So lately I have stayed shut the hell up; on best behavior for at least two years now.


I live in the same apartment complex as Reggie and Chris Paul of the Hornets. I'm buds with all them, but I passed on the party Reggie hosted Monday night.  However, here's a picture of an ice sculpture of Reggie's jersey from that night.

So Bruce Bowen is retired; gone from the San Antonio Spurs. And the Spurs are now loaded, picking up Richard Jefferson and Antonio McDyess and this beastly rookie power forward DeJuan Blair to back up Tim Duncan. Whom then, without Bowen, should CP3 battle individually? I say Jefferson. Number 24 seems a bitchass already. 



Hell, CP3 builds a rivalry by himself. I don't see any other Hornets proving their guts on both sides of the floor like him.

I was having cocktails with friends at the Four Seasons in San Francisco, and some architects from Korea joined us. One of them asked what I did for a living, and when I told him I was a color consultant, we talked about the relationship between color and architecture. He asked me to submit a paper for an exhibit he was preparing in South Korea for the 2009 Gwangju Design Biennale. He wanted the color perspective to relate to his theme Global Living, One Earth, One Sun.

For this second blog entry, I thought I would share a modified version of what I prepared for him. I added some extra visuals for your viewing pleasure. Every so often (well, at least four times a year), I hope to share my process or observations. Your feedback is welcome.

In the same way that customs, language, and food define a culture, color and light contribute to the experience of place. Careful observation will reveal a location’s visual impression. Cities and towns are distinctive and unique. People select colors in their surroundings, preferring certain combinations and avoiding others. Color sense and color experience appear to be collective vernacular expressions. Color choices respond to a location’s specific physical characteristics and the natural environment.

Why do the bright colors of a sun-drenched coastal city look garish in a foggy landlocked metropolis? There are many answers.

First, the angle of incidence of the sun’s rays determines the quality of a region’s light. It shifts daily and seasonally. It controls the depth and intensity of shadow. It also influences the apparent intensity of environmental color. Polar locations such as Nome, Alaska, receive much less sunlight than an equatorial location like the Galapagos Islands in Ecuador. When the sun’s light is perpendicular to the earth, the colors are evenly illuminated and have an overall flatness. In Ireland, the angle of light incidence grazes low across the horizon. Each blade of grass appears to be vivid emerald green.

Second, around the globe, sunlight varies in duration and intensity. There are locations we can describe as having bright light, median light, and shadow light. In Clue One: “One Earth, One Sun,” bright locations would be Sao Paulo, Brazil, and Cairo, Egypt. A median light location would be Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and shadow light cities would be Osaka, Japan, and London, England.

Third, all wavelengths of color race toward the earth’s surface at the same speed, the speed of light. But earth’s atmosphere sets up an obstacle course containing dirt particles, dust, pollution, and water molecules. The long wavelengths with slower frequencies such as yellow and red have an easier time avoiding obstacles. The short wavelengths such as blue have a high frequency, and they oscillate quickly. When the blue wavelengths hit an obstacle, which they are more likely to do, they are thrown off course and scattered, causing the sky to appear blue. Less blue remains in the light as it reaches the earth’s surface, so the light appears sunny to our eyes. Its main components are the longer wavelengths of red and yellow.

Fourth, the climactic conditions of our atmosphere—dry or moist, hot or cold—influence the molecular shape and size of the air molecules, which interact with the sun’s light. When the sky appears white, not blue, it is because the airborne molecules of water, sand, and snow in the atmosphere are large enough to bump all of the wavelengths off course. Dry air molecules, which accompany hot temperatures, are small and dense. They can also deflect light rays. The rays are refracted into a shimmering mirage of colorless light.

Finally, the altitude of a location influences the clarity and intensity of its light. At higher altitudes, the light is more reflective. Conversely, lower altitudes will have softer light as more obstacles interrupt the light’s path to earth.

Lois Swirnoff writes in her book The Color of Cities that our collective color reactions to our environment develop as an expression after prolonged exposure of the eye and brain to the conditions of environment. The specific colors common to a particular place arise because everyone living there has similar reactions to the qualities of light and local color in their environment. Regional color is not a product of designers or planners applying subjective color preferences or their individual tastes. As geographic markers, the colors of regions reveal the global range and diversity of vernacular expression.

Here are two specific descriptions of regional and local color characteristics.

Shadow City

London, England, at latitude 51 north, longitude 0, and an altitude of 49 feet, is one of the world’s foremost global cities. It is also the embodiment of a city of shadow light. The temperate climate, with its characteristic fog and light precipitation throughout the year, lowers the intensity of the sunlight and subdues color contrasts. Large areas have been left to gardens and parks. The parks contribute the largest areas of color to the urban fabric. London is physically large, with distinct neighborhoods. The medieval layout of the streets either meanders randomly or originates from a central point and radiates outward in an orderly pattern. The impression of the architecture is heavy, solid, and formidable. Sand-colored limestone was quarried near London and used on many of the major structures. Smaller structures were built with London stock bricks, whose distinctive color and soft appearance came from yellow Kent clay. These natural materials have matte surfaces that absorb the light. Over time, pollution has turned both stone and bricks grey. The visual memory of London is dark. Stoic humility and understatement are character traits of the British. Color comes mostly from the pageantry and ceremonial monuments that represent the traditions of the culture. The local color of London illustrates a palette that is staid and reserved, with bursts of strong color found in small accents on uniforms, family crests, ornamental shields and banners.

Light City

The NCAA suspended Oklahoma State WR Dez Bryant for the remainder of the season today, effectively ending his college career. Bryant was in trouble for lying about the relationship he had with former NFL player Deion Sanders. In other news LaGarrette Blount might be on his way back this year after sucker punching someone in the face(he deserved it), makes sense right?...

This ruling from the NCAA is absolutely ridiculous, it makes no sense at all...hogwash.

Well I guess if we have to move on we will. Dez Bryant is 6-2 215lbs, aka a large man. His has exceptional hands and is better at adjusting to the ball mid air then anyone in college football right now. He is fast, runs good routes, and even returns punts(for touchdowns).

Dez Bryant is the best WR in college football and should be the first wide out taken in next years NFL draft(barring any Darrius Heyward-Bey shenanigans).

For the record I think this suspension is ridiculous and the NCAA got this one wrong. Bryant will definitely have a chip on his shoulder and be ready to go come draft time.

Iowa redshirt freshman Adam Robinson is out for the year with an ankle injury. Iowa is on a quest for a perfect season and this is the last thing they needed. Robinson leads the team in rushing yards and is fourth in the big ten in yards per game.

Standout Minnesota WR Eric Decker will miss the rest of the season due to a foot strain. Decker was most likely going to be an All-American, Minnesota is hoping he will be able to return for a bowl game.

The Legend of Sleepy Hollow starts off with the narrator describing the town of Sleepy Hollow. The mood is set perfectly, the small town is said to be haunted and the townspeople believe there is such a thing as the Headless Horseman.

Enter Ichabod Crane, who is a schoolteacher and arrives at Sleepy Hollow from Connecticut to teach the townchildren. Ichabod is described as being tall and lanky, with his clothes too large for his thin frame. He also enjoyed reading, singing and flirting with the townswomen. He spent winter evenings with the old Dutch wives and loved to hear them tell ghost stories.

When he meets Katrina Van Tassel, he likes her right away. However, Katrina is being courted by Brom Van Brunt, a young man well known for being mischevious.

When there is a party at the Van Tassel home and the whole town is invited, Ichabod is more than happy to go. Ichabod hopes that one day he will marry Katrina and he will inherit the Van Tassel property.


As the night goes on with dancing and drinking, the townspeople begin to tell thier ghost stories. And invetiably, they begin to tell stories about The Headless Horseman.

Once the night is over and everyone starts to go home, Ichabod stays behind to speak to Katrina. When he is done, he leaves, walking home alone late at night. He begins to pass a few of the places where the ghost stories he heard of took place.


Out of the dark appears the Horseman, and comes after Ichabod. The next day all that the townspeople find is Ichabod's horse, hat and a smashed pumpkin. Everyone just accepts that the Horseman killed Ichabod.


A few years later, an old farmer visits New York and comes back to town saying that he saw Ichabod Crane there. He claims that Ichabod ran off that dark night because he was spooked in the woods and because Katrina had turned him down. Brom also seemed a bit suspicious whenever people mentioned Icabod's dissapearance. He would laugh at the story and seemed to know more than he was telling anyone.



I hadn't read The Legend of Sleepy Hollow since I was in grade school, and on re-reading it, I found that I still enjoyed it. This is a great spooky story for anyone, especially older school children.

I liked how Irving sets the mood and there is no dialogue in the story, it is just the narrator telling his tale.

From the listless repose of the place, and the peculiar character of its inhabitants, who are descendants from the original Dutch settlers, this sequestered glen has long been known by the name of SLEEPY HOLLOW, and its rustic lads are called the Sleepy Hollow Boys throughout all the neighboring country. A drowsy, dreamy influence seems to hang over the land, and to pervade the very atmosphere.

The dominant spirit, however, that haunts this enchanted region, and seems to be commander-in-chief of all the powers of the air, is the apparition of a figure on horseback, without a head. It is said by some to be the ghost of a Hessian trooper, whose head had been carried away by a cannon-ball, in some nameless battle during the Revolutionary War, and who is ever and anon seen by the country folk hurrying along in the gloom of night, as if on the wings of the wind.

All the stories of ghosts and goblins that he had heard in the afternoon now came crowding upon his recollection. The night grew darker and darker; the stars seemed to sink deeper in the sky, and driving clouds occasionally hid them from his sight. He had never felt so lonely and dismal. He was, moreover, approaching the very place where many of the scenes of the ghost stories had been laid.

This has been a year of surprises as far as the Heisman is concerned. Sam Bradford won it last year and he went down with an injury early in the season. After Bradford went down any chance of guessing this years winner went away. Not because we thought he would repeat, but no one stepped up, not Tebow, or McCoy.

Since this race is wide open let's take a look at the current top five candidates.

JUMP!!!!!

1.) Mark Ingram RB, Alabama

Alabama is having a great year, and their standout player has been Mark Ingram all season long. Ingram has 1,004 yards and 8 TD's on the season. He also has a game in which he rushed for 246 yards. Ingram is putting together the most impressive season for a RB and with Tebow and McCoy failing to impress Ingram finds himself at the top of the list.

2.) Jimmy Clausen QB, Notre Dame

Jimmy Clausen has shed the "bust" label quite well as he has been the most impressive QB thus far. His completion percentage is ridiculous, and he only has 2 INT's against 16 TD's. Notre Dame is not an overly impressive team, but Clausen has them looking at a solid season. If Clausen can continue to put up these numbers then he has a great chance of winning this thing.

3.) Tim Tebow QB, Florida

He will always be on this list because of what he has done in the past, and as long as Florida continues to win how can we take him off of this list. Tebow does have a couple thing going against him, one is the fact that he put up such ridiculous numbers in the past that it is hard to do any better. Tebow also has to deal with the highest of high expectations, even when they win people say that they didn't win by enough. As long as Florida stays perfect Tebow will be in this convo all year long.

4.) Case Keenum QB, Houston

When you lead the nation in passing your name will be in the Heisman race as long as you play for a semi-decent team. Add in the fact that he has thrown 20 touchdowns and only 4 picks, and we have a Heisman candidate. Keenum boasts a one loss team and 2,734 passing yards to lead the nation. Only problem for Keenum is he plays for Houston, and there are two QB's on this list ahead of him.

5.) Colt McCoy QB, Texas

McCoy is here because Texas is undefeated and he is their leader. His stats are not great but without a loss we can't take him off this list. McCoy has thrown an interception in every game this year and has not run with the ball as well as he usually does. That being said a down year for McCoy is still a good year. McCoy has slim chances of taking home to award due to the fact that there are three QB's ahead of him.

DARK HORSE

Jerry Hughes DE, TCU

TCU is really good and Hughes is their best defensive player. Hughes already has 8 sacks on the year, and he faces double teams all the time. A defensive player won't win the award this year but if we could pick one it would be Hughes (sorry Eric Berry). Hughes should be taking home other hardware so don't feel bad for him. TCU warwagon is running out of seats so if you want in let us know now

When I was a kid the old man would take me and my brother fishing in the Atchafalaya Spillway and it never mattered how badly the day would begin, we'd fish our hearts out till the very end.

We may not have filled the box up every time with fish, but we finished. 

When we went down 24-3 against the Miami Fish, did you really think we wouldn't finish? That's where we dominate -- and it's our modus operandi -- finishing in the fourth quarter. And on Sunday we scored 22 points to the Dolphins' 0 in the fourth to finish the Fish 46-34.

You might think Drew Brees got the team turned around with five seconds to go in the second half when he persuaded Sean Payton to skip the field goal on the half-yard line and let him punch it in. That did leave us down by just two touchdowns at half time. But I'm here to tell ya it was middle linebacker Jonathan Vilma in the second quarter who shut down the Wildcat -- "We gonna make it into a pussycat offense, we gonna make it purr," as Bobby Hebert said last week -- and gave us some three-and-outs and changed the tone of the game.
Vilma finished with 10 tackles.

Courtney Roby came up big on special teams with a big return in the first quarter -- and a great tackle on punt coverage -- that set up our first score, a John Carney field goal of 46 yards! That old man's still got legs, I tell ya, even though he missed another field goal and an extra point later on.

And then of course Darren my-main-mofoing-man Sharper picked off his sixth interception and third pick-six of the season to close it 24-17. Unreal.

Ricky Williams certainly has got a lot left in the tank. The 32-year-old ran a career-long 68-yard touchdown in the first half.

Hells yeah for adversity. Big-time sportswriters and Baton Rouge poo pooers, the naysayers, the unBelievers who in the first half quit watching after saying "Same 'ol Saints", are assured a warm seat on the bandwagon after this game. You now have a team that overcame four turnovers on the road and readjusted in the second half to kick ass.
It wasn't easy. The same offensive line that kept Brees upright against the Giants all day gave up five sacks to the Dolphins, most of those in the first half. And No. 99 Jason Taylor had jshox cursing as he sacked Brees and forced a turnover, making me wonder again why the Saints signed Jeremy Shockey instead of Taylor in 2008.

But jshox showed up with four catches for 105 yards. And that 65-yard-pass, the one where I proved to The U and the 305 that I still got it after breaking a tackle and pushing Gibril Wilson for 30 yards with a stiff-arm, was my old-school kickass self. Wilson got Shockeyed!

You know, I had a funny thought while we were getting whipped in the first half: Miami is winning with Nick Saban's players.

Get it, you looney and ungrateful LSU fans? Yeah, jshox saw thousands of you leave early Saturday night after beating down Auburn after crying for seven weeks about the Tigers not beating anyone down.

In the fourth quarter the NFL's fourth-best rushing attack, yeah, that's us, and you don't have to be told we can throw it, too, leaned on Mike Bell, who rocked chinstraps on 12 carries for 80 yards.

Fullback Heath Evans also played big but got rocked on one catch-and-run; we're confident he's alright, if not immediately.

Congratulations also to Porter for returning his first pick-six at the end to give us 47 points. I wanted another touchdown on the board and I know we wouldn't have put another one up there, running the clock out and satisfied with 40 points instead, because coach doesn't believe in running the score up like ogre Bill Belicheck.

It's too bad I don't have any photos of Porter or Sharper or even of myself, but I rely on the AP for photos and those plays took place between the thirties. I guess AP photogs just park behind the end zones all game.

What causes the orange moon of autumn? During the fall, the moon lies close to the horizon. From this position, its light has to travel twice as far to reach our eyes than it does when the moon appears directly overhead. Pollution, smoke, and cloud particles, along with dust stirred up during the crop harvests, creates an obstacle course and scatters the light. The short wavelengths of blue, green, and purple are pushed off their trajectory toward earth. As a result, the long, strong wavelengths of yellow, red, and orange win the honor of bathing the moon.

Weather and biology control the intensity of fall foliage color. As the days shorten and temperatures drop, trees signal their leaves to seal off their connection to their stems. The process of photosynthesis stops, and the radiant green hues start to lose their vibrancy. The lack of water triggers chemical reactions. Carotene, a pigment also found in corn and carrots, causes maples, birches, and poplars to turn yellow. Anthocyanins, also found in all red and blue berries, black currants, and purple sweet potatoes, are responsible for brilliant red and orange foliage. Tannins give the oak leaves their distinctive brown color.

All Hallows’ Eve on October 31 marked the end to the old Celtic calendar year. Celts hollowed out turnips, beets, and rutabagas, placed a candle inside. They decorated windowsills and porches to welcome home spirits of dead ancestors and ward off evil. American immigrants adapted the tradition, and the bountiful, large pumpkin offered a super-sized lantern. Mother Nature branded the fall palette and imprinted it deeply on our unconscious. We can take the associations we have with fall colors—the bountiful harvest, the completion of a cycle, the warmth of the fire, the celebration of magic and mystery—and apply them to our built environment, using them to influence behavior and create mood.
