Before I get to my game picks for this week, I just want to thank anyone who is reading that served in the military. You guys sacrifice your lives while I get to sit behind a computer and talk about football. I also want to send my deepest condolences to anyone who lost family members in the 9/11 attacks. God Bless.
Packers over Saints- If my predictions are correct then this is a NFC Championship preview. It will also feature two of the best QB's in the league in the Packers Aaron Rodgers and the Saints Drew Brees. In this matchup of the past two Super Bowl MVP's, I think Rodgers has the edge with Ryan Grant and Jermichael Finley back in the offense. Also, the defending champs are undefeated when they open up the season over the past seven years.
Ravens over Steelers- This is the funnest and most violent rivalry in all of football, perhaps all of sports. It is also a defensive game, so it will be high scoring, but don't let that fool you. It still will be an exciting game with Ray Lewis on one defense and Troy Polomalu on the other. I picked the Ravens to have a breakout season and beat out the AFC Champions, so winning this game is very important for Baltimore.
Browns over Bengals- I know what you're saying, its the Browns and Bengals, and neither of these teams will be very good in 2010. There are story lines going into this game though. For the Bengals, Andy Dalton and A.J. Green are making their debuts, while Pat Shurmur is making his coaching debut for the Browns. If Colt McCoy plays half as well as he did in the preseason, this will be a blowout.
Texans over Colts- Peyton Manning is out for this week 1 matchup in Houston and if the owners Jim Irsay's tweet is correct, a lot longer. Week 1 is the start of the Texans run to the AFC South crown and beating Indy at home is vital if they want to accomplish that.
Titans over Jaguars- Even though this game won't be as entertaining as the other AFC South game going on, it still will be a measuring stick for how far both of these teams will go. The Titans will go a lot farther now that Chris Johnson is signed to a long term deal, the interesting thing to watch for Tennessee is if Matt Hasselbeck can stay healthy. On the other sideline, Jacksonville has a unsettled QB situation with Luke Mcown (who will start) and rookie Blaine Gabbert. Maurice Jones-Drew will keep this game close, but the Titans will get out of Nashville with a win.
Bears over Falcons- This will be a matchup of the top two seeds in the NFC from last season. Both of them lost to the Packers in the postseason last year and have high expectations for 2011. Jay Cutler might not have to prove how tough he is to his team, but he does to all 31 other franchises and fans. Meanwhile, Falcons QB Matt Ryan has Roddy White and Julio Jones as receiver's and they are geared up for a Super Bowl. However, week 1 won't go Atlanta's way.
Chiefs over Bills- Both of these teams were opposites in 2010. One won their division, while the other were one of the worst in the league. The Bills are improved, but the Chiefs have an incredible rushing attack that will help them win this game even if QB Matt Cassel doesn't play.
Eagles over Rams- I smell an upset here, but I am not going to ruin what could be a perfect 16-0 record of picks. The Eagles are loaded with talent and now get a chance to put that talent on the field against the Rams. You shouldn't underestimate St. Louis, who have one of the best young QB's in the league in Sam Bradford. They also have an underrated defense with Chris Long at defensive end. I don't know if he can catch Michael Vick though.
Buccaneers over Lions- For years these teams were punch lines in every football related joke and trying to watch them was just to painful. However, things have changed in 2011. Both the Bucs and Lions have huge expectations for 2011. The Lions' QB Matthew Stafford will have to stay healthy if Detroit wants to take the next step, while the Bucs have to find leaders on a very young team. Josh Freeman is one of those leaders and will light up Detroit's secondary on opening day.
49ers over Seahawks- The NFC West was the worst in 2010 and it doesn't seem like things will change in 2011. So, both these teams do have a chance to make the playoffs even though they are two of the worst looking teams in the league. For college football fans, know that this is a pro football game even though Pete Carroll and Jim Harbaugh are standing on opposite sidelines. Both these teams lack talent at the most important position in the NFL. Expect a lot of turnovers from Alex Smith and Tavaris Jackson in a low scoring game, but a game where the 49ers take advantage of one of those mistakes.
Redskins over Giants- This will be the most emotional game of the day. Ten years after the attacks on the Twin Towers, the Pentagon, and an attempt on the White House, the Giants travel to FedEx Field to face the Redskins in Washington D.C.. Even though the 2011 season won't go Mike Shanahan's way, September 11th will. Credit the crowd for this win.
Chargers over Vikings- Adrian Peterson ran banana's on the Chargers defense the last time these two teams got together. Even though I don't expect the same performance out of Peterson, I still expect a great game out of the #1 back in the league. I also think that Donovan McNabb (my comeback player of 2011) will have a impressive debut. I am attending this game and I know the Chargers always start out slow, 2011 will be different. Fantasy owners, start Philip Rivers and Antonio Gates.
Cardinals over Panthers- This game is full of debuts. First, on the coaching front. Ron Rivera will make his debut for the Panthers as head coach after three seasons as the defensive coordinator in San Diego. Panthers rookie QB Cam Newton is playing in his first professional game after a very impressive preseason. As for the Cardinals, they hope Kevin Kolb can take off where Kurt Warner left off. Carolina won't be the worst team in the league this year, but their season will start with a loss.
Jets over Cowboys- For the first Sunday night game of the year, this is a great matchup. On top of this being a game in New York, the Ryan brothers will go head-to-head for the second straight season. This time around, Rob is the defensive coordinator of the Cowboys and has a far better defense then he did in Cleveland. We already know what to get out of Rex's defense, which will give Tony Romo problems and will be the difference in this game.
Patriots over Dolphins- I know I picked the Chargers to win the AFC Championship, but the Patriots could be poised to have the best record for a second straight season. They will have to wait for a good test, because their first game is against the Dolphins. Miami has all sorts of problems and it all starts at QB with Chad Henne. He is obviously not the next Dan Marino, but he might be the best short term solution for the Dolphins. New England runs away with the first Monday Night game of the year.
Broncos over Raiders- This is the final game of opening weekend and it is an AFC West battle. I think the Raiders and Broncos will be vastly improved in 2011. The Raiders swept the division last year and did not make the playoffs. Even though I don't expect Oakland to have the same season, I think they will have the same record. On the other side is Denver, which will start Kyle Orton at QB Monday night, but will eventually start Tim Tebow. Lets not get to ahead of ourselves, the Broncos win.
