This tragedy with the nuclear accident in Japan certainly puts a big question mark on the safe and cheap use of nuclear power.
We all know that they are extremely expensive…only being built because there are very hefty government subsidies to do so. We also were fooling ourselves into believing they were safe. Yes, they were well designed and yes, they had all kinds of backup systems and emergency contingencies…But what they did not have was the vision to envision the unlikely: a 9.0 earthquake followed by a tsunami that would knock these power plants out and render their backup systems unusable.
I pose this question once more: Why can’t we, the United States of America, one of the most technological advanced societies on this planet come up with the right solutions to our energy needs?
I for one think that windmills are beautiful; I also love looking at that beacon of light that is the obelisk of a solar power plant in Spain. These are all cheap, clean, sensible sources of energy…Why can’t we get with the program and tell Exxon, Coal and the Koch brothers to go and fuck themselves?
