Mai's house in Tulsa was large and beautiful and, in keeping with the tradition in Vietnam, didn't have a stitch of furniture beyond a kitchen table downstairs, and a bed upstairs. After driving around for a while with the adress she had given me over the phone, I finally spotted the yellow house with white trim and a pretty porch, out in front of which sat a pair of the smallest shoes I'd ever seen.
