With the lockout reaching its 75th day today, I don't see an end to this labor battle any time soon. Even though I don't know if there will be a season because of this, I still think there are plenty of good QB controversies to look foward to in 2011, or 2012. Lets start with #5.

5. Tom Brady vs. Ryan Mallet

Let's get this straight: nobody will ever replace Tom Brady, or at least be able to. Ryan Mallet was picked by the Patriots in the third round of the draft and people started thinking about Brady's future. As I mentioned in my History of the Franchise series, Brady said that he could play another ten years and that he is not going anywhere. While this is probably true, what if Mallet impresses in the preseason so much, that he becomes the #2 QB? Then what if Brady gets injured during the season and Mallet takes over and pulls a Matt Cassel? What if whispers start rising about how much Brady is washed up? Well this is not a what-if league and I might be getting ahead of myself. This all might be true, but I'm sure that the Mallet-Brady rivarly could start to resemble some classic QB controversies like Montanta-Young and Favre-Rodgers. This is all just specualtion and that is why it is #5. To me Ryan Mallet is just trade bait for the future and we know how New England is in the draft.

4. Michael Vick vs. Kevin Kolb

At the beginning of the season last year, Kevin Kolb was the projected starter for the season, but in the NFL a lot changes at a fast pace. Kolb suffered a concussion in week 1 against the Packers when Michael Vick stepped in and redeemed himself. Now for the 2011 season, Vick is expected to start, which doesn't make Kolb to happy. Kolb loves Philly, I'm sure, but he also wants to be a starter. With this place unlikely to be Philadelphia, I think he will get traded. The number one enemy in this trade: the lockout. See the longer this lockout goes, the less interested teams will be. Look at the 49ers, they are offically dropped out of the race after saying they want Alex Smith back because of an uncertain future. The Seahawks might be next to get Matt Hasselbeck to come back. That brings us back to the Eagles, who are asking a very high price for Kolb. If no team is expected to live up to their standards, they will probably keep Kolb. It would also be smart to keep Kolb for insurance to Vick, who didn't start every game for the Eagles due to injuries. Both these guys have become class acts, so I don't think we will see any arguments or fierce out-tweeting, but what we could see is two guys fighting to be better then their counterpart and that could be fun to watch.

3. Carson Palmer vs. Andy Dalton

Even though Carson Palmer has voiced how much he wants out of Cincinnati, the organzation won't budge and definetly won't trade him. In the second round of the draft this year, the Bengals apparently moved on without Palmer after picking Andy Dalton in the second round. This brings us to some what if's like the Brady-Mallet battle did. What if Palmer realizies that he isn't good at anything but football and would do anything, even play with the Bengals, in order to finish out his dream. Here comes Dalton who had aspirations to start this season. Both will be trying to out preform each other, like any good juicy QB controversy. The Bengals will have to choose between either the kid or the veteran. I think it is pretty certain that Palmer will retire, but if he doesn't, this will be one of the best QB controversies in the league.

2. Donovan McNabb vs. John Beck

Redskins fans everywhere thought a bright future was coming with Donovan McNabb and Mike Shanahan running the show. Well they were wrong. Now it seems that the Redskins want nothing to do with McNabb after trading for him last Easter. Thanks to the lockout, Washington is stuck with McNabb... for now. Also the lockout has brought about a lot of player runned workouts from many different teams, including the Redskins. One QB at the player-only workouts is 2010's third stringer, John Beck. Beck then said that he is expected to be the starter in 2011, which is actually reasonable because Rex Grossman is a free agent and again, the Redskins want nothing to do with McNabb. I think this would suprise everybody if Beck does start for the Redskins in 2011, but it wouldn't be crazy. The reason being that if there is a lockout and the Redskins are passionate about not having McNabb behind center, who on their roster knows the playbook better then Beck. If this lockout lingers on till August, I doubt anybody will want to trade for McNabb. So there you go, both Beck and McNabb could be fighting for the #1 job thanks to this lockout. Your welcome Redskins fans.

1. Jimmy Clausen vs. Cam Newton

After selecting Heisman trophy winner Cam Newton #1 overall in the draft, the buzz was already started about what will turn out to become of Jimmy Clausen. The Panthers selected Clausen in the second round of the 2010 draft. After a disastorous 2010 campaign, changes came for Carolina. That included the hire of Ron Riveria as coach and the ddrafting of Cam Newon. Now here we are and now the media is blowing the story, "who will wear #2" way out of proportion. Even if the story is bogous and everyone is taking it to seriously, it would just be the start to our #1 QB controversy. Unlike all of these other controversies on this list, I am certain both Clausen and Newton will be on the Panthers roster in 2011. This begs the question, do you start a new future with Newon or do you give Clausen another changes (in Clausen's defense, he had zero talent and zero help around him in 2010). With that said both guys will try to outsmart and outduel each other on the football field, but lets try to keep it clean.
