I receive a lot of review books, but I have never once told lies about the book just because I got a free copy of it. However, some authors seem to feel that if they send you a copy of their book for free, you should give it a positive review.
Do you think reviewers are obligated to put up a good review of a book, even if they don’t like it? Have we come to a point where reviewers *need* to put up disclaimers to (hopefully) save themselves from being harassed by unhappy authors who get negative reviews?
That's a good topic. I receive several books to read & review online. Some come from authors, publishers or from library thing. I always give an honest review. And my review is my opinion, just because I like or dislike a book, doesn't mean someone else will feel the same.
I know I'm not going to like all the books I read. That's impossible.
Some books I like more than others, and I try to give reasons why I liked the book or disliked it when reviewing. Recently I did give a book that was sent to me for review, a negative rating and review. I felt like I couldn't put the review any other way, I just did not enjoy that book at all, was not able to finish it, and was offended by a character in it. And it felt like this certain character did not need to be offensive to make this book work.
I owe my blog readers an honest review and always give one. But I also do not want to disrespect the author and thier work. So if I don't like a book, and it has been sent for me to review, I try to be honest when I review it, yet still remain respectful to the author. And as I said, what I may dislike in a book, others may find enjoyable.
