One of the greatest players in NBA history, Shaquille O'Neal, retired Friday having scored the 5th most points in NBA history. Even though I was pretty young when he played for the Lakers, I know he loved being in front of a camera. This got me to thinking, what NFL players love the camera as well? Note: none of these guys were as crazy or as entertaining as Shaq!
Chad Johnson & Terrell Owens
Last year when the Bengals got the WR duo of Chad Johnson & Terrell Owens together I thought the two would be two busy fighting over the camera then the ball. I was right, as Cincy had a terrible season going 5-11. Johnson is just crazy because for one he changed his name to Ochocinco and he is not even that good as a WR on the field. Of course when he does score, Johnson is the king of TD celebrations. Take a look for yourself. Off the field during the lockout this year, Johnson has tried to ride a bull and also is trying out for soccer. Owens on the other had has a terrific career as a WR and is second to Jerry Rice in almost every receveing category. Of course his career has been overshadowed by things like this. Owens will also go down as a QB career killer. Let's look at his record: Owens had a dispute with Jeff Garcia during his time in San Fran and both players were traded. Garcia went to play for the Lions, Browns, Eagles, Bucs, and is now in the CFL but has never been at the Pro Bowl form that he was with the 49ers. Exhibit B: Owens is traded to the Eagles where he takes the team to a Super Bowl, but soon after that gets into another dispute with QB Donovan McNabb, Owens is fined numerous times before getting traded and eventually, Philly trades McNabb to Washington. Exhibit C: Owens and Johnson try to join forces to finally win a Super Bowl, but instead the team goes 5-11 and now Carson Palmer wants to retire. Sure these guys entertained, but unlike Shaq, they always didn't preform at their jobs.
Steve Smith
Smith might only be 5'9, but he sure has a big mouth. Sure he has led the Panthers to some of their greatest success in franchise history, but has done to much celebrating and to much gloating over his career. Unlike T.O. or Ochocinco, he has not been responsible for driving a QB away... yet. Here is look at Smith's best TD dance.
Steve Johnson
Johnson, despite being on the Bills, had a breakout season in 2010. Of course he is remembered for this play he didn't make. All together Johnson had a great year catching 82 balls for 1,073 yards and ten touchdowns. I remember after one great game people were naming him as a WR great. The success went to this kid's head an I'm afraid he will be a one hit wonder. Despite this, he did give us one of the best TD celebrations in recent memory.
Randy Moss
Sure Moss flew under the radar in 2010 by playing for three different teams and only catching five touchdowns, but he will go down as one of the greatest WR's and one of the greatest entertainers in NFL history. I will remember Moss the most as a Viking because he set so many records there and his celebrations were the best. Of course Moss will have to be a little less outgoing then in Minnesota if he wants a team to sign him after the lockout is over. This is by far my favorite Moss celebration.
This has been really fun and I just want to say to Shaq thanks for giving us some of the greatest sound bites in sports history. None of these guys could do what you did for sports. If you have anymore outgoing players that I didn't mention, email me at ninersuperfan@yahoo.com. Keep celebrating football fans.
