On Monday, former Giants WR Plaxico Burress is being released from prison after carrying a gun in a nightclub and it accidentally went off. The Giants RB Brandon Jacobs has already said that New York will not re-sign Burress, so here are other teams that might be intersted in Burress.
Last year the Ravens signed the character-issued Donte Stallworth. It would not be suprising if Baltimore decides to sign Burress. Anquan Boldin is no doubt the Ravens #1 WR, but with all the attention on him the defense really keyed in on him. What the Ravens need is a good #2 WR and Burress would be a good fit. Sure he is coming out of prison, but if Burress is anywhere as good as Vick coming out of prison, I'm sure the Ravens will be interested. The best thing about Burress when he was with the Giants was that he commanded so much attention from the defense, that it would be hard to pay attention to anyother WR's on the team. Imagine a defensive coordinator trying to plan against Burress and Boldin. That could be crazy.
Philadelphia Eagles
The Eagles created a stir a couple years ago when they signed Michael Vick out of prison. In 2010, that controversy turned out really well for the Eagles. Vick would win Comeback Player of the Year and had one of the greatest season a QB has had. If the Eagles sign Burress, they would probably have more former prisonmates then any other team has had in NFL history. All joking aside, Burress would be a great fit for Philly. First of all, Vick knows what it is like to come fresh out prison so he can help back-up Burress when it comes to the media. Second of all, the team has a lot of young talent at WR (Desean Jackson, Jeremy Maclin) and could use someone who has experince to get them to the next level. Burress could be a missing piece for the Eagles, but would most likely play #3 WR behind Jackson and Maclin.
New York Jets
The Jets had one of the most explosive WR corps in 2010. The only question, will it be back? Santonio Holmes, Braylon Edwards, and Brad Smith are all free agents. The Jets probably won't re-sign Smith and both Holmes and Edwards are going to want the same amount of money. So if only one will get re-signed, who is the #2 WR? That is where Burress comes in. Rex Ryan has been known to sign "spotlight" players and Burress would definetly help New York. Burress could help the Jets when it comes to redzone offense because Burress was one of the best WR's in tight spaces. QB Mark Sanchez is young , but is mature enough to anything that Burress throws at him.
St. Louis Rams
One of the most suprising teams in the NFL last year, the Rams came within one game in winning the NFC West. I picked St. Louis to rise in 2011 as you can read here. Last year the Rams considered trading for Randy Moss, but due to the fact they had a rookie QB, they did not want the distraction. Sam Bradford proved that he is a mature leader in the NFL and that could make a case for St. Louis to sign Burress. The Rams need a solid #1 WR after Bradford threw to a bunch of no-name WR's last year year. Even though athletic ability could come into question, Burress would be a great fit for the Rams. It would especially be sweet for Rams fans to get a good WR after missing out on Julio Jones and A.J. Green in the draft. If the Rams feel like Bradford can handle the drama of a drama queen WR, then I think St. Louis should make this move when the lockout ends.
