Lets continue the Top 10 with the best tight ends...
10. Jermichael Finley- The youngest tight end on the list, Finley is the next generation of talent at this position. After spending his rookie season battling Tory Humphrey, Finley had a break out season in 2009 that included a six reception 159 game against the Cardinals in the playoffs (second only in NFL history to Kellen Winslow's performance in the Epic in Miami). For his career, Finley has 82 receptions, 1,051 yards, and seven touchdowns. While he spent the 2010 on injured reserve, Finley will no doubt be a force to be reckoned with as long as Aaron Rodgers is the QB.
9. Heath Miller- While the Steelers are known for their great defense, Miller has been a great target for franchise QB Ben Roethlisberger. In his five seasons, Miller has 282 receptions, 3,178 yards, and 28 touchdowns. On top of the great stats, Miller also has two Super Bowl rings and during the 2007 season Miller had career numbers in touchdowns (7), receptions (47), and yards (566) on the way to winning Super Bowl XLIII. Even though Miller has only been to one Pro Bowl (2009), he is no doubt one of the best tight ends of the past decade.
8. Marcedes Lewis- Probably the best blocking tight end on the list, Lewis is one of those "silent, but deadly kind of weapons." Even though Lewis' pass catching ability was question his first three years in the league after being drafted in the 2006 draft, he has still managed to put up solid numbers; 181 receptions, 2,224 yards, and 17 touchdowns. Lewis also had a terrific 2010 season setting the franchise record for most touchdowns in a season with ten on the way to his first Pro Bowl.
7. Brent Celek- The biggest draft steal on this list was taken in the fifth round of the 2007 draft. Celek owns the franchise record for yards in a game with 131 yards and also receptions with 10. Both of which he broke in 2008. Even though Celek is now used primarily used as a blocking tight end, he has put up big numbers with 161 receptions, 1,978 yards, and 14 touchdowns. Celek is also apart of a elite trio of WR's that includes DeSean Jackson and Jeremy Maclin, with Michael Vick at the helm.
6. Zach Miller- Despite having a less then manageable QB situation, Miller has had a great career with the Raiders. Miller gave Oakland what they didn't have in a long time, a dynamic tight end that could both block and be effective in the passing game. While Miller is a great player in the NFL, he is an unbelievable fantasy player. In 2010, Miller had 60 receptions, 685 yards, and five touchdowns on his way to his first Pro Bowl. For his career, Miller has had 226 receptions, 2,712 yards, and 12 touchdowns. Miller is also third in franchise history on the career receiving for tight ends list.
5. Jason Witten- One of the toughest players in the NFL plays for America's Team and is one of the best tight ends of this generation. Witten has been in the league since 2003 and has made the Pro Bowl each season. Witten is also a five time All-Pro selection and in 2006 became just the tenth tight end in NFL history to have at least 60 receptions in three straight seasons. For his career, Witten has 6,967 yards, 617 receptions, and 36 touchdowns. While Witten has accomplished a lot in his career, he is still young and by the time its over he could be the best tight end in NFL history.
4. Vernon Davis- While the past decade hasn't been that great to the 49ers, Davis has been one of few bright spots for the team. Davis entered the league in 2006 but was a huge disappointment his first few years in the league due to maturity issues and QB problems. Finally in 2009, a year after he was benched by head coach Mike Singeltary, Davis showed his true potential catching 13 touchdown passes which is tied with Antonio Gates for the most in a season by a tight end. Davis was also voted to his first Pro Bowl that season. For Davis' career he has had 3,011 yards, 237 receptions, and 29 touchdowns.
3. Dallas Clark- Sure having Peyton Manning is a plus for Clark, but is still a great tight end. Clark is the guy Manning goes to in crunch time and is very valuable for the Colts and it showed when Clark missed a majority of the 2010 season. Clark might have only been to one Pro Bowl, but he is also the highest paid tight end in the NFL. Indy also generally uses Clark more in the passing game then for blocking, so while he is not dynamic, he still accounts for most of Manning's touchdown passes during his MVP seasons. It is shown in Clark's stats; 393 receptions, 4,535 yards, and 44 touchdowns.
2. Tony Gonzalez- He might be one of the oldest players in the NFL, but Gonzalez could make the argument that he is the best tight end in NFL history. Gonzalez might of made his name with the Chiefs by setting the record for most touchdown receptions for a tight end, but he has set on that quest for that all elusive ring with the Falcons. With both KC and Atlanta, Gonzalez has 1,069 yards, 12,209 yards, and 88 touchdowns. Gonzalez also has been to 11 Pro Bowls and a six time first team All-Pro selection. Even if he doesn't get that ring, Gonzalez is one of the best tight ends ever.
1. Antonio Gates- Many fans of Gonzalez will criticize me for not putting him #1, but by the time Gates career is over I think he will be better then Gonzalez. The best things about Gates, he went undrafted in 2003 and uses his basketball skills to be a better pass catching tight end. Despite being undrafted, Gates set the record for the most touchdown receptions in a season for a tight end with 13. So far in his career, Gates has racked up 514 receptions for 6,763 yards and 67 touchdowns. Gates also has been to seven Pro Bowls and is a three time first team All-Pro selection.
