The preseason starts a week from tomorrow and even though some fans don't care about it, fans of these teams should stay tuned.
Blaine Gabbert- The Jaguars surprised everyone when they traded up to the 10th pick and selected Gabbert. What was not surprising is why they did it, he was no doubt the best QB in the draft and the most likely to be successful at the next level. Even though David Garrard will probably be the starting QB in week one, if Gabbert preforms well in the preseason, that create a lot of intrigue with the Jaguars QB situation. Jack Del Rio is also on the hot seat and could be pressured to go with Gabbert if he preforms well during his four exhibition games.
Kevin Kolb- Both the Cardinals and Kolb got what they wanted. Kolb wanted to be a starter and the Cardinals needed a starting QB. Even though Arizona gave a lot to get Kolb (a second round pick and DRC) it was the right decision considering that the team had no better options at the most important position in the league. While Kolb will be the starter and only get a glimpse of play in the preseason, it will be important to see how this guy preforms and if he is ready to be a full-time starter. Remember, Kolb has only played in seven NFL games and has a record of 3-4, not usually what you are looking for in a QB.
Vince Young- The troubled Heisman trophy is now insurance to starting QB Michael Vick in Philadelphia. The Eagles traded away Kevin Kolb to the Cardinals and knew they needed a back-up due to the fact they can't trust Vick to stay health all 16 games. Young will be a player you want to watch on the field, as well as off the field during the preseason. As the back-up, Young will get the majority of the playing time and will have to keep his cool off the field if he wants to revitalize his career. It will also be interesting to see how many times he will be in the wildcat with Ronnie Brown.
Jake Locker- Even though the Titans did sign veteran QB Matt Hasselbeck to mentor Locker, it will be interesting to see if he is ready to grasp the offense at any given time. Hasselbeck isn't the youngest QB in the league and he could go down at any time, which could lead to Locker to steer this offense. RB Chris Johnson might be the vocal point, but it all starts and ends with the QB. We all know that Locker had a lackluster senior season at Washington, but one great quality that QB's should have is a short memory. Locker needs to put his college days behind him and preform well in the preseason if he wants to be a star in this league.
Alex Smith- Once deemed as the savior of the 49ers, Smith is now a bust in the eyes of many 49ers fans. Even though this might be true, the 49ers re-signed Smith to a one year contract to help mentor rookie Colin Kaepernick. Many teammates, including Vernon Davis, say that Smith is finally the leader the 49ers have been looking for ever since they drafted him first overall in the 2005 draft. The preseason will be his chance to prove himself to the fans and his teammates. Smith could also have a hard time because his number one receiver, Michael Crabtree, will miss the preseason and could miss the start of the regular season.
What player should we keep our eye on in the preseason? Tell me in the comment section below.
