Here at NFL Fan Talk I try to remain unbiased because I am a 49ers fan, but I just have to bring this up. New coach Jim Harbaugh is having the worst offseason a first year head coach has ever had. Whether that translates into the regular season, we will have to wait and see. Not only did this lockout cancel many important, but boring, OTA's and mini camps, but now Harbaugh's best player is holding out of training camp. I love Frank Gore, but he is 28 and the 49ers aren't looking to re-sign him to a multi-year deal, so I don't know what he is trying to succeed. Then earlier today the 49ers officially dropped out of the sweepstakes to land free agent CB Nnadmi Asomugha. The 49ers haven't made a splash in free agency since Mike Nolan was coach and a chance to sign one of the best players in the league just went out the door. After missing out on Patrick Peterson in the draft, the 49ers need Asomugha more then any other team in the hunt for him does. Since the Jets just dropped out of the race for the superstar CB, I would try again to beat out the Cowboys for him, but it might be to late. The best free agent signing the 49ers have had is the kicker David Akers, who was signed to a three year deal. If Harbaugh wants that to be the highlight of his first offseason, people will be criticizing him before the season even begins. I know Harbaugh wants to build this team through the draft, but a chance to sign one of the best CB's in NFL history doesn't come around every offseason. Like I said worst offseason ever. Even worse if you are fan.
Update: The Niners are interested in Jets free agent CB Antonio Cromartie according to Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.com
