R.I.P John Mackey

Legendary Baltimore Colts tight end John Mackey died yesterday at the age of 69 years. In a ten year career with the Colts and Chargers, Mackey was a five time Pro Bowl selection and a three time All-Pro selection while winning Super Bowl V. Off the field, Mackey became the NFLPA's first ever president and helped the players earn $11 million in pensions and much needed benefits in a strike. Mackey became the second tight end to be inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1992 and is considered to be one of the best tight ends in NFL history. In his career Mackey caught 331 receptions, 5,236 yards, and 38 touchdowns. Unfortunately, Mackey lived out the rest of his life with the disease known as dementia and many close friends and family considered him not the same person after that. However, Mackey not only was a great player, but helped gain respect for the players. Which is much needed in the time of this work stoppage.

R.I.P.- John Mackey (September 24, 1941-July 6, 2011)
