The top D-linemen of 2011...
10. Ndamukong Suh- If the Lions want to turn around the bad fortune that has followed its franchise throughout their history, it is going to start with Suh. Despite Suh only playing for a year, he did more then a rookie (especially one playing for the Lions) is expected to do. Suh led all rookies and defensive tackles in sacks with 10 on the way to the Defensive Rookie of the Year award and a trip to Hawaii. Alongside Nick Fairley, Suh will become one of the most premier DT's in NFL history.
9. Justin Smith- While Patrick Willis is the leader of the 49ers defense, his left hand man is Smith. After a seven year career with the Bengals, Smith has fit in nicely to the 49ers defensive line. Smith has racked up 664 tackles and 65.5 sacks so far in his nine year career. In 2010 Smith had 70 tackles and 8.5 sacks on his way to being elected to a second straight Pro Bowl.
8. Jared Allen- Probably the guy with the best sack dance in the NFL, Allen makes being a blue collar defensive end good. Allen will probably become one of the best draft steals in NFL history after the Chiefs selected him in the fourth round of the 2004 draft. In his seven year career with both the Chiefs and the Vikings, Allen has had 392 tackles and 83 sacks. Before last season, Allen had made three straight Pro Bowls and had also been selected to the All-Pro team. While Allen is a very talented player, he had a slight dip in performance last year by only recording one sack in his first seven games.
7. Vince Wilfork- One of the only players still left from the last Patriots last Super Bowl team, Wilfork makes coach Bill Belichick's job a lot easier. Over Wilfork's seven year career he has played both at nose tackle and defensive end racking up 360 tackles and 9.5 sacks. In 2010 Wilfork alternated positions and was able to record 57 tackles and two sacks on his way to a second straight Pro Bowl.
6. Osi Umenyiora- While his first name his short, the pain an opposing QB feels when being hit by Umenyiora lasts a lifetime. Umenyiora was drafted in 2003 and since then he has had 303 tackles and 58.5 sacks. Umenyiora, alongside Justin Tuck, has made the Giants one of the most feared defenses in the league. Even though Umenyioras has not been selected to a Pro Bowl since 2007 (he has two total in his career), he holds many records. Two of them include the most sacks in a game (6) for a Giant and the most forced fumbles in a season (10) in NFL history. Last season Umenyiora was an All-Pro as he had 18 tackles, seven sacks, and six forced fumbles.
5. Justin Tuck- On the other side of the defensive line then Umenyiora, Tuck helps make a deadly QB killer duo in the Big Apple. In Tuck's six year career he has 307 tackles, 40.5 sacks, and 17 forced fumbles. On his way to a Pro Bowl and All-Pro selection, Tuck recorded career highs in tackles (76) and forced fumbles (6). Tuck also had 11.5 sacks and the most famous one was the one that knocked Bears QB Jay Cutler out of the game. Even though the G-Men didn't make the playoffs, Tuck will continue being one of the most feared defensive ends in the NFL today.
4. Haloti Ngata- Apart of the most feared defense in the NFL, Ngata just looks like a Baltimore Raven. Ngata has recorded 247 tackles and 12 sacks in his five year career with the Ravens. In 2010, Ngata made his second straight Pro Bowl and was again an All-Pro selection by racking up 63 tackles and 5.5 sacks. Before the lockout ended, the Ravens made Ngata their franchise player by tagging him.
3. Julius Peppers- While Peppers might be a freak of nature, he is no doubt one of the greatest defensive ends to ever play in the NFL. After a successful eight year career with the Panthers, Peppers signed with the Bears as a free agent before last season. With Carolina and Chicago, Peppers has recorded 435 tackles and 89 sacks. Last season Peppers helped the Bears defense get back to respectability by having 54 tackles, eight sacks, three forced fumbles, and two interceptions. Peppers also finished fourth in the voting in the defensive player of the year voting and also was a Pro Bowl and All-Pro selection for the third straight season.
2. Mario Williams- While the Texans had one of the worst defenses last season, Williams continued to live up to his first overall status. So far in Williams' five year career he has 230 tackles and 48 sacks. While Williams was not a Pro Bowl or a All-Pro selection, he had 28 tackles and 8.5 while only starting 13 games for Houston. Williams is a two time Pro Bowl and All Pro selection and with Wade Phillips as defensive coordinator, he will get to the QB plenty of times in the rest of his career.
1. Dwight Freeney- The Colts might be Peyton Manning's team, but Freeney runs Indy's defense. In Freeney's nine year career he has 267 tackles and 94 sacks. Last season was the first time the Colts had not won 11 games in a while, but that did not stop Freeney from making third straight Pro Bowl. Freeney had 25 tackles, ten sacks, and five forced fumbles while starting every single game for the Colts at defensive end. In 2007, Freeney was made one of the highest paid players in the NFL and in 2011, he is the best defensive linemen in football.
